The best way to chop up a classic Japanese film? Put a likeable actor in the part. I love both versions of 54 and 84, but there's always been something about Raymond Burr's contribution to 1985 that I've always loved even if practically did nothing but make a pretty speech at the end.

Reportedly, New World wanted to dub and re-edit the film into a tongue-in-cheek parody, but Raymond Burr, taking the message of the original Godzilla very seriously, convinced them to keep the film relatively serious and delivered all of his lines in a straightforward and serious manner that was meant to be respectful to the film and the character of Godzilla.
so quite frankly, I greatly appreciate that.
